2020.02.02 22:06 forgotthepass [Itinerary Check]Osaka → Kyoto → Tokyo (2 weeks)

TL;DR : Planning a trip to japan with a couple of friends. 16/04/2019 - 27/04/2019 -Osaka → Kyoto → Tokyo. Must see / avoid locations or activities?
Sorry for the length. I know the list is long and a bit optimistic but we tried to put in everything we might want to do. We'll probably not be able to see everything in here but that's fine.
16/4/2020 Arrival at Osaka Kansai at 12:40
17/4/2020 Visit : Osaka Castle
18/4/2020 Trip from Osaka to Hiroshima 1h 25m by train (Shinkansen)
19/4/2020 Walk around Osaka (shopping)
20/4/2020 Go to Nara Park 50m by train
21/4/2020 Explore Kyoto
22/4/2020 Check Out
23/4/2020 Visit Hitatchi Seaside
24/4/2020 Day visit to Odawara - Hakone
25/4/2020 Day visit to Enoshima & Kamakura ( 1520¥)
26/4/2020 Day visit to ChiChibu(Saitama) ( 1900¥)
27/4/2020 Check Out
  1. Do you think there are things we could add to or remove from the list? Maybe some things are impractical for this time of the year or any events that only happen during those dates?
  2. Do the prices and train times look correct? They all come from online sources but they might be outdated.
  3. Is there any place we can just store our luggage so we don't carry it with us while traveling (that's mostly for the last day. We'll have a few hours after we checkout and before our flight leaves)
  4. Anything to keep in mind about transportation? We're still not sure about whether or not to get JR Pass and the ticket/pass system for the metro seems a bit convoluted (unless I'm misinterpreting things). Any suggestions/ways to save some money on transportation?
THANK YOU EVERYONE WHO READS THIS! Any sort of feedback is greatly appreciated :)

2019.10.25 11:53 lecarolina Itinerary Check for 2.5 weeks in Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka (December 2019)

hello hello!
My partner and I will be visiting Japan this December (7-25) and we're very excited as this is our first international travel together! It will be my first time in Japan. My partner, however, has been to Japan many times (He grew up in Japan/America and speaks fluent Japanese). Although he's seen many of the tourist destinations for himself, he's said he would be more than happy to revisit/introduce them. Though he's technically an "expert," he's always been a very spontaneous, itinerary-free person whereas I'm used to habitually pre-planning and over-planning to a T, mostly to prevent anxiety from getting the best of me. Below is the tentative itinerary for our trip to Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka; I'd love to receive some feedback on it. This forum's been a big help so thank you so much!
Sunday, Dec 8
Monday, Dec 9
Tuesday, Dec 10
Wednesday, Dec 11
Thursday, Dec 12
Friday, Dec 13
Saturday, Dec 14
Sunday, Dec 15
Monday, Dec 16
Tuesday, Dec 17
Wednesday, Dec 25

  1. Is there anything you would add/replace/omit?
  2. How would the crowds, and accordingly, this itinerary, fare during the weekends in Kyoto (I presume it will be very busy)
  3. Do you think Odaiba is worth visiting during our stay in Tokyo? I know it's jam-packed with things to do and see (onsen, shopping, Gundam, Borderless, Joypolis, etc) but I'm wondering if's worth the (train) trek from Kichijoji (or Shinjuku).
  4. (On a tangent) I'm planning on purchasing region-specific food omiyage for friends and family. In general, how long (or short, rather) is the expiration date? Does HND have Kyoto/Osaka food omiyage?
  5. (On another tangent) My partner has a relatively weak immune system and is prone to getting ill during his travels. How should I adjust my itinerary to accommodate him better? Are sleeping pills (melatonin; Drewell EX) helpful to beat jet lag?
  6. Which arcades are arguably the "best" in Akihabara? Are there unique things in Akihabara we should definitely do? (No maid cafe, please!) Are we missing out if we don't go to Ikebukuro? (We'll be going to the Pokemon Center in Nihonbashi)
  7. Would you recommend buying a combo ticket (Tembo Galleria + Tembo Deck) for Tokyo Skytree? Or is it sufficient to buy just a single ticket to the deck?
  8. I've read up on several posts online regarding winteChristmas illuminations in Tokyo. Which ones are particularly worth seeing?
  9. Is Iwatayama worth the hike and more?
  10. How is the crowd in Dotonbori on a Monday evening?
So sorry for the long list of questions, thank you so, so much in advance for your help!
[Edit] roughly 9 days (oops) in Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka (8 days in Fukuoka)

2019.10.07 22:53 Jahlei First time in Japan! November Itinerary help

After three years of hunting deals and preparing, I'm finally getting a chance to go to Japan - the very top of my bucket list! Obviously, my mind going into this is getting little to no sleep (I usually only sleep 5 hours anyway) and arrange for the most time-efficient itinerary so that I can see as much of Japan as possible during my 10 days.
I decided on spending a long weekend in Osaka/Kyoto as soon as I land, followed by the remaining days in Tokyo. I'm only traveling with one other friend who has zero interest in planning and will agree to everything I've decided. I'm hoping that the below itinerary isn't too unrealistic or biting off more than I can chew, but I also have questions and would love any guidance!

2019.06.16 06:47 aeriecircus 5 Days Early June (5/29 - 6/10) in Kyoto/Osaka (Plus 5 days at the International Conference Center for work)

First, I'd like to say that I was super nervous traveling alone to Japan given that I speak no Japanese and the general fears about being a woman traveling alone, but they ended up being unfounded. I've never felt so safe traveling, the language barrier was rarely an issue, and getting around was much easier than expected. I learned all of this in advance in this sub, but nothing like experiencing it yourself. :)

Dallas Fort Worth > Los Angeles > Kansai (few out mid-morning from Dallas on Wednesday 5/29, arrived at Kansai on Thursday evening 5/30).

Airport Transportation - Used the Haruka limited express from Kansai to Kyoto Station, got the discount and ICOCA card. I didn't get any rail or transit passes the whole time (I was kind of confused by all of the options)... I kept it simple and just kept reloading my ICOCA throughout the trip and used it for everything. I didn't find any transit that I wanted to take that didn't take IC cards (except for the shinkansen).

4 nights at Hotel Ethnography Kikoku no Mori ($156/night)
- I chose this hotel due to its proximity to Kyoto Station and its price. It is about a 15 minute walk to Kyoto station in a quiet neighborhood. The hotel itself is lovely, small, and has personalized service. I arrived later than expected due to getting a little confused getting my pocket wifi at the airport, and they were kind enough to call after me before they closed at 9pm, and the clerk ended up staying late to let me in (I arrived at around 9:45). They were very kind about accommodating me despite my poor planning... much appreciated. Room was spacious and comfortable, Japanese-style bathroom, and the room came with its own portable smartphone/wifi hotspot you could use during your stay. They also provided an English map of Kyoto and a booklet with suggested walking/public transit tour routes in different areas of the city. The included breakfast each morning was tasty, loved the wasabi rice seasoning they had!

5 nights at Grand Prince Hotel near the International Conference Center (covered by work)
- This hotel is directly across the street from the ICC, convenient for the conference I was attending, and had an underground passageway nearby connecting to the Kokukaisaikan subway station. The hotel itself is... odd. It is circular in shape with a central courtyard. The decor is opulent, with bright colors, and feels somewhat dated. The water pressure in the shower is impressive, but the rooms, particularly the bathrooms, need updating. There was mildew on the wallpaper in the shower. The restaurants were pretty expensive and the breakfast buffet was underwhelming.

2 nights at The Millenials Kyoto ($30.89/night)
- A capsule hotel located on Kawaramachi-dori very near Pontocho Alley, Gion, and Nishiki Market. I was really pleased with this place... beds are full-sized with a pull-down lockable shade for privacy. Gender-separated floors with a common area on the top floor of the building with shared work space, lounge, kitchen, bikes for rent, and a happy hour. Friendly people, too! Plus a pet store with puppies next door. ;)

DAY 1:
Took the JR San-In Line from Kyoto Station to Saga-Arashyama.
Tenryuji - My first temple, so quite impactful! Pretty crowded, but it was lovely wandering the grounds. Beautiful bamboo grove behind the temple.
Arashyama Monkey Park - Just a short walk over the river from Tenryuji and the shopping area nearby. Inexpensive entry fee, but be prepared for a long sweaty hike up a mountain (~30 minutes). I needed a few breaks to catch my breath on my way up. The monkey park itself is very small, don't expect a big nature area! It is a viewing platform with a lovely look over the city plus a small building where you can go in and buy peanuts and fruit to feed the macaques through a metal grate for safety.
After hiking back down the mountain, I crossed back through the shopping area near Tenryuji and cooled off with my first of many matcha soft serve cones. :)
Bamboo Forest - I recognize that it's possible that I did not experience the bamboo forest in its full glory (was there more to explore that I missed? Or was that really all there was?). It was pretty, but not awe-inspiring, and I was ready to move on pretty quickly.
Nison-in Temple - This one was definitely off the beaten path compared to the sites I'd seen earlier in the day. Only a few visitors were there with me. The grounds and gardens were peaceful and lovely, and there was a small little hike up the hill behind the temple that was nice. I would recommend visiting.
Giouji Temple - This one was suggested by a clerk at my hotel, so I made a point to stop by. It's a very small, peaceful temple. The highlight is the wooded, mossy garden with many ferns. Unfortunately, there were groundskeepers doing work on the garden when I stopped in. I wasn't upset about it, though, because I thoroughly enjoyed the quiet walks through the neighborhood in the area on the way, and stopped off to visit a few cemeteries.
Then I hopped on a bus to Kinkaku-ji - The famed Golden Pavilion. Very crowded. The gardens and the golden building itself were very pretty, but nothing earth-shattering, especially with the crowds to fight. Still, it's one of those Kyoto sights you just have to see. I was ready to be finished...
I took the train over to Kawaramachi to get dinner and explore a bit in a different area. I ended up getting my first ramen fix at Ichiran (and looooved it). After that, I walked around the outdoor covered mall area just taking in the neighborhood and ducked in a few shops and a huge arcade to check out the scene. A nice relaxed way to end the day before walking back to my hotel to collapse in bed.

DAY 2:
The next day, I headed out via JR Nara Line to Nara for a day trip (the train ride took about an hour).
Deer Park - I wandered past Kofuku-ji temple and the surrounding buildings without pausing too much, and headed toward the deer park and Todaiji. The deer were everything I wanted and more... but do beware feeding them, they nip your skin and clothes to get your food! People have taught them to bow for food, which is really cute... and they don't seem to mind being touched.
Todaiji - If I had to pick my favorite thing from my entire trip, this would be it! The grandeur and scale of the whole thing was incredible. I am not religious but got super emotional being in the building. Definitely worth the whole trip.
After Todaiji, I was hungry, so I looked up places to eat in the area. I ended up at a little izakaya restaurant called Maguro Koya and had some delicious tuna tataki and sashimi. Then, I went to the Watawata Owl Cafe and spent an hour with some fluffy owls before heading back to Kyoto. I still had plenty of day left and was paranoid about getting everything in I wanted, so I decided to pay an evening visit to Fushimi-Inari-Taisha.
Fushimi-Inari-Taisha - I was happy with my decision to visit late in the day. It was crowded and warm, but not overrun. I admit I didn't quite do my research... I didnt realize that it was so long a hike and so expansive! It took about 50 minutes to make it to the top of the hike. I got a little lost on the way back down and ended up on some of the trails on the other side of the mountain that do not exit back into the city, so I kind of had to climb the mountain twice. :) No worries, though, the park was beautiful, and I was walking back down into the city just as the shops were closing. The crowds were sparse enough at the time I went to get a few good pictures of the gates without people in the frame.

DAY 3:
This was my Osaka day! I took the JR to Osaka Station and then hopped on a local train up to my first stop:
Cup Noodles Museum - Ok, so this was a bit of a flight of fancy and probably not worth the time out of my day it took. I got there right after opening, which was a good plan... this place was CROWDED. If I had to do it over again, I would have gone STRAIGHT to the My Cupnoodles Factory (where you can create your own ramen cup with your chosen seasonings and toppings, decorate the cup, and get it sealed and shrink-wrapped). There was a small line when I got there, so I decided to go through the museum exhibit first, and by the time I got to the factory, I waited in line for 45 minutes at least to finish my cup. The tasting room was closed, so after I left, I headed toward Ippudo, which had a location just a short walk away. At this location, they had a special recipe dedicated to Momofuku (the Cupnoodles inventor), which I tried... but didn't like so much. Oh well.

Kyocera Dome - Baseball game!! I went to see the Orix Buffaloes play the Nippon-ham Fighters. So cool seeing how Japan does baseball and the stadium experience.

Next, I caught another JR train to go to Kobe for dinner. I knew I could get kobe beef elsewhere, but how often do you get to say you had kobe beef in Kobe? I went shopping in the mall near Sannomiya and grabbed some Kobe beef teppanyaki at Steakland... paid about $60 for the meal, which was about all I was willing to spend on fancy steak this time around. :) I hopped on the Shinkansen in Kobe and was back at Kyoto Station in 28 minutes. :)

DAYS 4-8:
Work at the ICC! Not much to mention here other than the convention food was not so great. :-/ Biggest highlight was the dinner some local professional contacts took me to off the Karasuma line near Gojo. Traditional multi-course small plates in a restaurant not frequented by tourists... amazing experience. Unforatunately, I don't know what it was called as I didn't navigate there and never saw a menu (my host ordered everything for us).

DAY 9:
Stored my bag at my conference hotel and walked to the Eizan Railway station to go up to Kibuneguchi. Wandered around in Kibune for a little bit... I must not have done my research, but I didn't realize what a lovely little town it would be! Many restaurants build platforms out over the river for lunchtime dining. I was there early, so I didn't realize they would do this! I ate at a tiny 3-table restaurant early, around 11:30am... after I left and started to head toward the trail leading to Kurama-dera was when I saw people actually out on platforms eating lunch. Drat! The hike from Kibune to Kurama-dera was challenging but pretty! And Kurama-dera itself was lovely, as well. A nice refreshing hike that ended it a walk to the Kurama Onsen for a bit of sauna and soak before hitching a bus ride back to my old hotel to pick up my bags and make the transition to my last hotel of the trip. After checking in to my hotel, I walked over to Pontocho and found a place for some Wagyu yakiniku... it was pretty hard to find a quality restaurant at that time in the evening that had room for even 1 person (me!).

DAY 10:
This was a long day. I think I'd pretty much reached my fill of temples and walking by this point.
Started in Nishiki Market, where I explored and bought a few souvenirs. Then I did a long walking tour of the Gion district, which was mostly marked by crowds, which, if you can't tell by now, were not my jam. My feet were also sore and legs tired from my trip. I walked by Gion Corner to say I'd been there, but didn't spring for the geisha performances because the online reviews were poor. Instead, I went early over to Pontocho to eat shabushabu at a restaurant that had been full the night before, Yamafuku... got a seat and it was DELICIOUS.

Hope this wasn't too long! And I hope that my experience allays the fears of any other nervous solo travelers like myself. :)

The bonds are being deposited at CDC accounts. Some 90 exporters have so far received provisory bonds worth Rs7 billion in their CDC accounts. The bonds would mature after three years from the date of issuance; meaning bond holders could convert them into cash. Bond holders would receive 10% rate of return per annum.
The bonds of value Rs100,000 each are transferable and can be deposited as collateral with banks to acquire loans. Refunds to the 600 CDC accountholders are estimated to total around Rs45 billion.

In a large meta-analysis consisting of 88 studies Pietschnig et al. (2015) estimated the correlation between brain volume and intelligence to be about correlation coefficient of 0.24 which equates to 6% variance. Researcher Jakob Pietschnig showed that this strength of the positive association of brain volume and IQ has been overestimated in the literature, but still remains robust. He has stated that "It is tempting to interpret this association in the context of human cognitive evolution and species differences in brain size and cognitive ability, we show that it is not warranted to interpret brain size as an isomorphic proxy of human intelligence differences". Another 2015 study by researcher Stuart J Ritchie found that brain size explained 12% of the variance in intelligence among individuals.
It is a variable that summarizes positive correlations among different cognitive tasks, reflecting the fact that an individual's performance on one type of cognitive task tends to be comparable to that person's performance on other kinds of cognitive tasks.)
In more recent history, as a global average, about four or five women reproduced for every one man.
Men Go Their Own Way.

2015.08.18 15:42 TheHeianPrincess Itinerary advice for December 30th-January 14th

Hi everyone, I'm looking for some itinerary advice for my Japan trip from December 30th-January 14th. Well, it's more like 'Help me plan my trip, I'm a shopaholic and want to do so much stuff!' I depart on the 29th from London and arrive at 8.50am on the 30th at Narita. I plan to sleep a lot on the coach to the airport and on the plane.
I will be travelling entirely on my own for the whole trip, so I am hoping I can make my itinerary a little busier than if I were travelling with a spouse/friends/family. I am into Japanese street fashion, mainly Lolita, Gyaru and Dolly Kei so most of my activities are shopping based haha.
I have a couple of things planned already, and an idea of places I'd like to go but any advice of when to do what would be greatly appreciated. I'm participating in a homestay with a lady in Harajuku (perfection) so I set off from there most days. I will have a Suica card but I'd like to walk a little to experience more.
Things that are definitely planned are that I'll be travelling from Tokyo to Kyoto on the overnight bus on Jan 6th, returning early morning on the 8th. I got a special deal on a maiko henshin package (on the 6th) so I feel like I can't rebook for another date.
Basic itineraries roughly based on direction of travel, but not sure what days to do them on:
Dec 30th (Wed) - Arrive at Narita around 9am. Catch the Keisei bus to Tokyo station, then head to Harajuku to meet the lady, put my bags away/unpack, get acquainted with the neighbourhood. I estimate it'll be just after midday but I was hoping to head to Closet Child Harajuku and do some general shopping, then Shinjuku and Ikebukuro for more of the same. I don't intend to do a full day's shop in each of these places, so I may revisit on other days.
31st (Thur) - ???
New Years Day (Fri) - If there are any lucky packs that catch my eye (I'll research online before I leave), do some lucky pack shopping at LaForet, and/or general NY sales shopping. Not sure what to do afterwards, maybe more department store shopping or go to Meiji-jingu?
Jan 2nd (Sat) - Again, if any lucky packs catch my eye, do lucky pack/NY sales shopping at Shibuya 109 or Shinjuku Marui Annex, hopefully both? Not sure what to do after, other than general NY sales shopping.
3rd (Sun) - ???
4th (Mon) - ???
*5th (Tue) * - ???
6th (Wed) - Catch the night bus to Kyoto, arrive early morning. Dress up as a maiko. Not sure what to do for the next half of the day.
7th (Thur) - Rent a kimono to wear. Other than that, not sure what to do! Visit temples/shrines, go shopping?
8th (Fri) - ??? Catch night bus back to Tokyo.
9th (Sat) - Arrive in Tokyo early morning. ???
10th (Sun) - ???
11th (Mon) - ??? It's Seijin no Hi, which I've always loved to follow due to the beautiful kimono coordinates but I don't know what to do on the day, other than a regular day's activities.
